New Forest Marque
The landscape, wildlife and culture of the New Forest have been shaped over many centuries by the activities of small scale farming, commoning and woodland management.
The development of the New Forest Marque® means that people can choose food and goods which have been grown, reared, caught, brewed or produced in the New Forest area. It allows local producers to market their produce under a collective and easily identifiable New Forest symbol, whilst at the same time reassuring consumers about the traceability of the food they buy. In order to use the Marque, producers have to ensure their goods meet stringent standards relevant to their own particular specialty. Meat producers, for example, must show that high standards of animal welfare and good husbandry have been applied at all times.
Producers have access to a wide variety of point of sale materials to help promote their produce and its New Forest credentials, and benefit from promotion of the New Forest Marque® by retailers, caterers and accommodation providers wishing to advertise their use of local products. These businesses can also apply to be associate members of the Marque Without a sustainable rural economy, and in particular commoning and farming, this unique landscape would cease to exist in the form that has been recognised, not only by the millions of tourists who visit annually, but by the Government through its designation of the area as a National Park. Users of the New Forest Marque® are authorized by the directors of New Forest Produce Ltd; a company established specifically to promote and govern the use of the Marque. The company’s directors are unpaid volunteers and are all involved with agriculture and food production in some way.
